and instead she fell back into the soft, fluffy darkness.
In the darkness, Josie hovered.
"Am I dead?" D.J. asked. She lay on a metal table in the midst of a peaceful stillness.
Josie's bare feet swung above her, back and forth, back and forth. The angel looked down and smiled. "No, dear. What kind of guardian angel would I be if I allowed you to get killed?"
"Unless I miss my guess, I've been shot. Aren't you getting a little lax in the protection department, Josie?"
"No. I told you, I'm informed of imminent danger to your life, nothing else. Remember, I warned you to duck at the hotel. That shot would have killed you. This injury isn't life-threatening, and it's brought you and Christian closer together."
"How do you figure?"
"Well, right now he's agonizing over your being hurt. Pretty soon he'll start to think about what his life would be like without you in it. Then it's a short step to wanting you to be in his life forever."
"Oh, please, I'm gonna throw up. Forever? Nothing lasts foreverexcept maybe Twinkies. For sure not relationships."
Josie sighed. "You're being difficult again. I thought we'd made progress last night. Why can't you at least try to see my point of view?"
"Why should I? I didn't ask for your help. Just because you're a sap doesn't mean I have to be one. I'm not going to ruin my life and McCall's by believing in something that doesn't exist. What's between him and me is lust, pure and simple."
